Questions about the feedback order

How does this work?

Before each class you're attending, open that session's tab in the class Sheet, pick your name, and fill in the positions you want, best first. After the cutoff, the sheet goes through this tool and the order is posted in the group chat.

What are the two methods?

Hungarian (whole-class best fit): it looks at everyone's lists at once and finds the order that leaves the class happiest overall. It works hard to avoid leaving anyone with a bad result, even if that means someone gets their 2nd choice instead of their 1st.

Boston (round by round): everyone's 1st choices are checked first. If only one person wants a position, they get it. If several do, a random draw decides and the others move on. Then the 2nd choices of those still waiting are checked, but only for positions that are still free, and so on. Anyone left at the end is placed randomly in the remaining positions.

Which one is fairer?

They're fair in different ways. Boston gives everyone an equal shot in each draw, and nobody's 2nd choice can beat your 1st. But if you lose early draws, you can end up with whatever's left.

Hungarian protects the class as a whole from bad results, but it may give you your 2nd choice so someone else avoids their 6th. We're trying both and asking which you prefer.

Will listing more positions count against me?

No, not in either method. Extra choices only come into play if your earlier ones don't work out. Listing a 2nd choice never lowers your chance of getting your 1st.

What does it mean if I only list one or two positions?

You're saying: “These are the ones I care about. Anywhere else is fine.” Both methods treat every position you didn't list as equally okay for you.

  • In Hungarian, if a position you listed is contested, it may go to someone with fewer good options, because you've said you're flexible about the rest.
  • In Boston, your chance in each draw is the same however long your list is. But if you lose, you're placed randomly among what's left, which tends to be the less popular positions.

If there are positions you'd genuinely dislike, list a few backups.

What if I'm absent, or forget to fill in the sheet?

If your name isn't in that session's sheet, you're counted as absent for that session and won't appear in the order. If you're coming to class, make sure your row is filled in before the cutoff.

How are random draws decided? Could it be rigged?

Every random draw is based on the session date. Anyone who runs the same sheet file with the same date and method gets exactly the same order, and you can check it yourself on this site.

Can I game the system?

In Boston, sometimes. Putting a less popular position first can beat listing your real favourite, because you avoid a draw. The risk is ending up with a position you like less.

In Hungarian, it's much harder: listing your honest order is your best bet.
